Genus Thinopyrum Family Poaceae

Description: Erect tufted perennials.

Leaves with blade stiff, glaucous, margins often scabrid.

Inflorescence spicate with a tough rachis, internodes flat and facing the spikelets, ciliate on the angles. Spikelets sessile, laterally compressed, usually appressed to rachis, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas, florets up to 16. Glumes unequal, firm, obtuse to truncate, apiculate, usually >7-nerved. Lemma broad-lanceolate, unawned or shortly mucronate, 5-nerved.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 20 spp., Asia, Eur. Aust.: 1 sp. (naturalized).

Some species of Thinopyrum have been used in wheat breeding programs. The single species in Australia is sometimes planted as a pasture species in inland saline areas, but is becoming weedy. From the Greek words for 'shore' and 'wheat'.
