Coleus sp. Boonalla (T.C.Wilson 1227) APNI* Description: Prostrate to semi-erect, semi-succulent to herbaceous, suffrutescent subshrub. Producing a pleasant smell when touched or crushed. Plants derived from seedling produce a distinctively globose tuber.
Leaves fleshy to succulent, circular-ovate to ovate, margin dentate or crenate, lower surface densely covered by orange sessile multicellular glands.
Inflorescence consisting of 1 or 3 racemose branches; verticillasters usually 6-flowered. Flowers capable of being cleistogamous. Corolla pale to deep bluish-mauve, tube curved downwards. Pollen orange.
Fruiting calyx accrescent. Mericarp glossy dark brown to black.
Flowering: Cleistogamous flowers can be produced throughout the year. Chasmogamous (i.e., outcrossing) flowers are typically produced during the warmer months.
Distribution and occurrence: This species grows in a variety of habitats, from semi-shaded flood zones to rocky outcrops. Found west of the Great Dividing Range on slopes and plains. This species is easily confused with C. australis. Current research is investigating species boundaries between it and other forms confused with C. australis, and is being prepared for taxonomic description.
