Description: Annual or short-lived perennial twiners.
Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets ovate to rhombic; stipules lanceolate; stipels present.
Inflorescence a raceme; pedicels ± square. Corolla white, pink, red or purple. Styles straight and blade-like.
Pod flat or inflated, strigose; seeds 3–6, hilum linear, white.
Distribution and occurrence: A monotipic genus native to tropical Africa, now widely cultivated as a food crop.
