Field Characters: Small sub-canopy tree (up to c. 20 m high); Bole cylindrical (up to c. 25 cm diam.); straight (bole c. 10 m long); buttresses buttresses present (buttresses up to c. 1 m high) or buttresses absent; spines spines absent; aerial roots aerial roots absent; stilt roots stilt roots absent; Bark brown, rough, pustular, lenticels irregular; Subrhytidome (under-bark) red or brown; less than 25 mm thick, 3.0-6.0; bark blaze consisting of one layer; strongly aromatic; pleasant; outer blaze red, markings absent, granular without splinters; inner blaze red, markings absent, granular without splinters; bark exudate (sap) present, colourless, not readily flowing (spotty), colour not changing on exposure to air, not sticky; terminal buds not enclosed by leaves.

Indumentum: Complex hairs absent; stinging hairs absent; mature twig indumentum (hairs) absent.

Leaves: Leaves clustered at end of branches or slightly spaced along branches, spiral (leaves occurring singly at a node and arranged spirally up the branchlet), compound (a leaf made up from two or more leaflets); petiole present, not winged, attached to base of leaf blade, not swollen; leaves pinnate (unbranched with more than three leaflets); petiolule not swollen; rachis present, absent, absent; leaves without a terminal leaflet (the number of leaflets even - paripinnate), broadest below middle, 9.0-19.0 cm, 6.0-8.5 cm, leaflets alternate, asymmetric; venation pinnate, secondary veins open, not prominent, but visible, intramarginal veins absent; leaves lower surface green, upper surface dull dark green or green, indumentum (hairs) absent; absent; domatia absent; stipules present, free, laterally placed, not encircling the twig, scale-like, not fringed, large, persistent.

Flowers: Inflorescence axillary, flowers on a branched axis, cones absent; flowers bisexual, stalked, flowers with many planes of symmetry, 2.0-4.0 mm long, diameter small (up to10 mm diam.) (2-3 mm diam.); perianth present, with distinct sepals and petals whorls, inner perianth white; 5, free; stamens 10, present, free of each other, free of the perianth; ovary superior, carpels joined (when more than one), locules 1; styles solitary (short), 1.

Fruits: Infrutescence arranged on branched axis, fruit 7.0-10.0 mm long, 5.0-7.0 mm diam., dark red, black, or blackish purple, not spiny, slightly fleshy, simple, indehiscent, drupe; seeds 1, to about 5 mm long, not winged, narrow (longer than wide), seed 1-10 mm diam. (2-3 mm diam.).

Distribution: West Sepik, East Sepik, Madang, Morobe, Central, Northern, Milne Bay, Papuan Islands & New Britain.
