Became interested in entomology when young. Post-WWII transferred interest to botany while studying for an Agricultural Science degree at University of New England. Subsequently lived in Sydney and botanised around Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

1956-1972 with CSIRO Division of Land Research and Regional Survey as a botanical collector on Papua and New Guinea land surveys.Transferred to CSIRO Plant Industry Herbarium as Assistant Curator to Nancy Burbidge. Then became CSIRO Plant Introduction and Quarantine Officer, based at Plant Industry.

1986 retired from CSIRO.

1990 left Canberra, moved to Port Macquarie NSW. (Source ANBG 2009)
