Plantation species or softwoods. Timber species.

Habit Large trees or small trees up to 20(-35) m high. Bole cylindrical, straight; buttresses absent; spines absent; aerial roots absent; stilt roots absent. Field Characters Bark grey. Rough; furrowed cork; subrhytidome red or brown; bark thickness <25 mm thick 10 mm thick; blaze consisting of 2 layers (outer layer dead and corky); strongly aromatic; resinous/linament-like; outer blaze brown; with stripes, corky; inner blaze white, markings absent, fibrous; exudate present, colourless, spotty, not changing colour on exposure to air (except when dry then turning milky), sticky. Terminal buds not enclosed by leaves. Indumentum Complex hairs absent. Stinging hairs absent; mature twig without hairs. Leaves Leaves spaced along branches <internodes readily visible> (but on distal ends of branches). Leaves spiral leaf bundles or whorled held out from branchlets (patent), 3 (per bundle), simple; petiole absent; lamina equally broad throughout much of length (needle-like); not dissected or lobed; hairs absent, domatia absent; stipules absent. Flowers Inflorescence on the trunk or branches <cauliflorous-ramiflorous> basal to current leaves. Flowers on an unbranched axis, arranged in cones (strobili); flowers unisexual, with male and female flowers on the same plant <monoecious>, flowers not stalked; perianth absent; ovary superior <seated above petals and sepals; hypogenous>. Fruits Fruits arranged on unbranched axis. Cones present, pale brown, seeds 100 (2 per scale), winged, longer than wide.
